Ben is smiling! It's been coming gradually over the last few days, but today I was able to capture some of those precious little grins!
Here's a video for your enjoyment (there's no sound though):

25 Random Things About Me

Okay, Heather tagged me, so here we go:

1. I will eat salsa, but only by dipping the chip into the juice. I will not scoop up the tomatoes, onions, spices, etc., but I do enjoy their flavor.

2. I love spring and fall in Utah, but that's about it. It's really a shame because the two seasons combined only last about 4 months. The best part about these times of the year: the way the mountains look! In spring, the mountains turn green and you feel like you could be in Ireland or something. In fall, you can see the progression of the leaves changing down the mountain. It starts at the top and works its way down until the leaves are changing in the valley, too.

3. I like picking things like scabs, peeling skin and pimples. I almost used to want more acne so I could pop more zits. Ew, that sounds really gross, but I can't help it.

4. My sister Michelle and I both wear glasses, but our parents do not. I'm pretty sure the reason I do is because I wore friends' glasses in elementary school for fun.

5. I had an under bite until I was about 11 years old when my orthodontist was able to correct it using braces.

6. I had braces twice: once to correct the under bite and again to straighten everything out. That's 3 years total.

7. I play World of Warcraft with Stephen. This is apparently a big deal, mainly because most people who play WoW are prepubescent boys.

8. For a long time, I didn't know what color my hair was naturally. Is it blond? Brown? But now I know- it's light brown. I haven't colored it for almost two years.

9. I like making silk flower wreaths. No, I LOVE it. If you want me to make one for you, I just need 15-20 dollars for the supplies and let me know what your favorite colors/flowers are.

10. My favorite color is yellow.

11. When I was in elementary school I used to wish I had blue eyes and then I decided it was okay to have brown because there was a song about brown-eyed girls.

12. I'm obsessed with organizing things, but my house is rarely clean. (There is a difference between being clean and organized)

13. I used to major in Physiology and Developmental Biology, but changed it after a semester and a half. To English.

14. I only applied to BYU. Good thing I got in, or who knows where I'd be.

15. I LOVE Harry Potter, but my old obsession has been replaced with a new one: Twilight. I love Edward! (For those of you who are not familiar of this book series: it's AWESOME. Keep in mind, though, it's not a literary masterpiece or anything.)

16. Vincent Van Gogh is my favorite artist, despite his oddities.

17. I don't know how many boys I've kissed. I didn't keep track. (Don't be alarmed; it's not THAT many)

18. Along similar lines, I dated 3 boys at once (not seriously) my first semester at BYU. That was fun.

19. I love Jello. A lot. I can eat most of a batch by myself.

20. As a child, I had a severe fear of clowns. In particular, I had a puppet, which was cool, BUT it was a clown puppet. The strings got so tangled at one point that I thought the puppet would come alive in the middle of the night and do awful things to me Chucky-style. Scary!

21. I've recently become obsessed with home decorating. It's so much fun!

22. I didn't get stretch marks on my belly when I was pregnant, but I have stretch marks covering my hips from growing quickly when I was younger.

23. I grew 2 inches within 3 months when I was 12. Too bad I had gotten a whole bunch of new clothes right before this period.

24. My younger sister "developed" well before I did. Boy, that was embarrassing.

25. I had warts on my hands and feet when I was a teenager. Don't worry, it's cleared up. And it's not contagious, anyway.

HA! I did it! I tag... Heidi! Okay, Heidi- now you have something to Blog about. :)

Pictures Update!

He's just so cute! I've become one of those crazy moms who, whenever anything remotely different happens, screams, "Where's the camera?? I've got to take a picture!" So, here are some of Ben's candid moments...
This pose was too adorable to NOT take a picture.

This was Ben's reaction to his very first bath. Grandma Nielsen helped us out (It was a good thing too, because I had no idea what I was doing).

Ben really enjoyed it.

This picture was just too cute.

So, let's face it- I'm obsessed! He's just SO CUTE! I hope you enjoy these as much as I do!

Things I wish I had known about labor, delivery, and everything afterwards...

So, one of the questions I always asked the moms when I was pregnant was, "So, what's it like?" Thus, I'm providing my own list for you potential moms-to-be with the things that shocked and surprised me. (Note: some of the items on this list are a little uh, gruesome)

1. If you can see your baby's head crowning, it's not that big- it's bigger.

2. If you want a mirror for your delivery, get that mirror! It's an awesome sight.

3. Take advantage of the nursery service in the hospital. You are not a bad mother. You need to get all the rest you can to prepare for the coming weeks.

4. Be careful not to rub your elbows too much on the hospital sheets- I got bedsores. If anything, please, apply lotion to your elbows liberally.

5. The more you walk around, the better you'll feel. It seems backwards, I know, but it works.

6. You yourself will feel like a giant baby for a while- diapers and all. Use the painkilling spray, the medicated wipes, the spray bottle, the whole deal. But be careful- you could develop diaper rash! Follow the same directions for yourself as you would for your baby.

7. You'll feel like you are leaking and it will never end. Don't worry, it gets better faster than you think.

8. If you find yourself holding your baby and crying for no reason, it's okay. Just cry.

9. It's okay to let yourself be babied- in fact, take advantage of all the help you are offered.

10. If life feels out of control, just simplify it. Just think: your responsibility is to take care of you and your baby. That's it. So ease your mind, and relax.

11. You will be tired. This will be normal.

12. Take this time to build your relationship with your husband. You have a new little person joining your family, and you can be more in love than ever. Enjoy your new family!

Parenting

Stephen and I have been on our own taking care of Ben for a week now, and it's much different than we imagined. Before you have a kid of your own, you imagine that there's this magical formula to "fix" their crying. But there's not. Last night, we followed the formula (feed, burp, change diaper, bundle, cuddle, bounce, and so on) but despite all our best efforts, Ben was just not happy. So he cried. From 12 to 2. And then, when we had almost given up to the point of exasperation, he farted. And was fine. So today I'm going to the store to purchase gas drops, which help alleviate infant gas. Miracle of miracles, let's hope this works! I don't know if we can handle a 2 hour stretch again tonight. Maybe tomorrow night, but not tonight. Poor little guy- he just can't handle all of his bodily functions.

2 Weeks Old

Ben had his two week appointment today, and he is super healthy! He weighs 8 lbs 2 oz, which means he's gained 12 whole ounces since he was born. Plus, he's grown a whole inch! Go Ben! He won't get any immunizations until his 8 week appointment at the earliest, so he evaded the inevitable poking and prodding for now. Here's some pictures from our latest gatherings and some cute ones of Ben:

Here's Aunt Liz holding Ben for the first time.

And here's Aunt Michelle...

And Aunt Heather.

Here's Grandma and Grandpa Hansen with Ben.

Here's Great Aunt Diana, Aunt Kirstin and Aunt Liz at the baby shower.

My Mom, Lovetta, Heather, Me, and Jenny (and Michelle's legs) at the baby shower.

Here's Great Grandma Bisel holding Ben the morning of his blessing.

We lined up Mormon Potluck style for lunch at Grandma and Grandpa's hotel after the blessing.

Uncle L.J. and Aunt Rachel hanging out with Ben.

Me, Grandma Nielsen and Aunt Sarah admiring Ben.

Grandma Nielsen holding Ben.

Ben's favorite place is his bouncer.

He especially likes taking naps there!

Today he discovered that there were toys to play with on the bouncer!

He even reached out to touch them! He's so skilled!
